Two gentlemen stood on parallel corners, each confined by a tattered gray umbrella. Traffic toddled to stops and starts and horns assaulted the occasional buggy, but neither man took notice of the times. Or, that is to say, both took proper notice of the time, safe between the ripples of infinite possibility, but paid little mind to its passage. They were consumed by raindrops that melted cobblestone and pounded concrete, not unlike the footfalls and footsteps and clickety-clack of ladies' heels that were mere seconds shy of stubbing toes or crushing tendons. At one point, swallowed whole by a telephone pole and replaced by a metal mailbox, the gentleman on the left fractured a smile to the gentleman on the right who, at that very moment, flickered with the image of dog-walking villains and alley cats.

The process ended abruptly, without a screech but with a quiet pop, not unlike the subtle sound of a man whose pearl buttons buckle under pressure. Time did not halt, but its travel did.
